Shell has had negotiations with the government of Jordan over a plan to drill for oil in the country’s shale deposits.
Maher Hjazin, head of Jordan’s Natural Resources Authority, said talks to develop oil shales, with a potential of 300 Bn bbl, were in the final stages, according to state-owmed news agency Petra. Hjazin said the project could help Jordan become energy self-sufficient or even export oil in the future.
He told the Jordan Engineers Association that Estonia’s state-owned Eesti Energia had completed a feasibility study to produce 36,000 b/d of oil from Jordan’s shales, which are the world’s
fourth largest shale reserves.
Hjazin said the reserves would cost around US $6 Bn to develop.
